Cities and towns (Pourashavas) are key to Bangladesh’s sustainable development
Rapid Urbanization is happening in Bangladesh causing need for increased facilities. There are 12 city corporations and 328 pourashavas in Bangladesh accommodating 40% of the country’s urban population. Most pourashavas suffer from inadequate infrastructure. In the coming decade more growth will continue and without improved living conditions of pourashavas pressure on resources and infrastructure in the bigger cities will also increase. Despite improvements in some areas, most towns and cities need significant financial support to introduce and use climate-resilient urban infrastructure that is needed to improve quality of life sustainably. Urban areas have been defined in BDP 2100 as one of the six hotspot areas.
Milestones:
2017-2020: Concept Urban Demonstrators LGED- DeltaCAP
January - April 2022: Select 2 pilot Pourashavas and Field visits
May 2022: Delta Conference and Signing LOI
June 2022: Start design and Implementation of 1st cycle 2 pilots projects
2023-2024: Feasibility studies, Start 2nd and 3rd cycle Up scaling
Pilot Pourashava-01: Keshabpur, Jashore
Keshabpur Upazila is located in Jessore District. Municipality (Pouroshava area) is 11.87 sq km and Population are 46169 nos.
Scope of Works:
• Upgrading park through landscaping/simple hydraulic structures, wooden walkways
• Increase water retention area to mitigate flash floods
• Designing Multi Functional Waterfront and park: recreation, water storage, ecosystem services
• Developing Public toilet, car parking lots etc.

Pilot Pourashava - 02: Raozan, Chottogram
Raozan Upazila is located in Chottogram District. Municipality (Pouroshava area) is 27.15 sq km and Population are 55874 nos.
Scope of work in Raozan Pourosova:
Increase water retention (expansion ponds) to mitigate flash floods.
Upgrading park through landscaping/simple hydraulic structures, wooden walkways.
Multi Functional park: recreation (future citizens of Raozan), learning space blind/ disabled people, water storage, flood management, ecosystem services
Public toilet, car parking lots etc.
